ABOUT US
OUR STORY
Our Starting Point: Young Education Professionals of the District of Columbia (YEP-DC) was created by and for young education professionals in 2007 to break down barriers between education policy, practice, and research by facilitating social and professional connections. The founders’ guiding belief was that cultivating networks and meaningful relationships would encourage a more cohesive and productive approach to to addressing our country's education challenges.
Our Growth: Starting with YEP-DC, the broader Young Education Professionals network has grown to 14 independent chapters across the United States over the past eight years. YEP-DC alone has thousands of listserv subscribers and hundreds of dues-paying members. YEP-DC’s quick growth indicates a broad demand of education professionals to connect, develop, and be empowered as leaders in their professional field.
Our Vision of Leadership: YEP-DC seeks to develop leaders who are committed to improving education outcomes for all students, no matter their background. YEP-DC leaders are knowledgeable in their field and committed to their personal and professional development. YEP-DC leaders are critical thinkers about how our education system serves students, using data, research, and best practices to guide their approach to classroom practice and the overall system policy. YEP-DC leaders take a stake in their community through service opportunities, demonstrating their commitment to improving local conditions through civic work.
Our Strategic Work: In 2015, YEP-DC began implementing its three-year strategic plan. After strengthening its Executive Board and Advisory Committee structure, YEP-DC created and launched its first professional development series called “Next Step.” The series was wildly successful. To build on this success, YEP-DC launched its first mentorship program in 2016. Through this program, constituents are paired with an expert in their desired education field to strengthen their career vision, build soft and concrete skills, and develop a plan to achieve their dreams.
Our First 10 Years: YEP-DC has made an impact in the educational sector in the Washington DC area for the past 10 years. YEP-DC looks forward to continuing preparing members to become leaders in the area and in the country as well as develop program and services that best serves its membership.
